Rob and Syndi Saltzman

Rob and Syndi Saltzman: A Journey Transformed by Etz Chaim

Rob and Syndi Saltzman’s connection to Judaism is rooted in both family tradition and discovery. Rob grew up in a traditional Conservative home in Baltimore, celebrating holidays, attending Hebrew school, and carrying forward the values of his grandparents and parents. Syndi, by contrast, had less exposure to Jewish traditions growing up, and it was through Rob’s family and their shared experiences that she deepened her understanding. “L’dor v’dor—what Rob’s grandparents and parents taught us—became the foundation for our family,” Syndi reflects.

Their Jewish journey took a transformative turn after Syndi’s Momentum trip to Israel in 2018. “When I came back from my Momentum trip, we started with something as simple as lighting Shabbos candles,” she recalls. “From there, it grew into hosting Friday night dinners, celebrating family milestones with deeper meaning, and embracing traditions we hadn’t fully explored before.” Through Etz Chaim, they discovered a community that bridges different levels of observance, creating meaningful connections across diverse Jewish backgrounds.

For Rob and Syndi, programs like Shabbos dinners and Wine & Wisdom offer intimate, memorable experiences that bring the community together. “Sitting with people from all backgrounds, learning Torah together, and seeing how everyone connects in their own way is incredibly meaningful,” Rob shares. These experiences have strengthened their family bonds, enriched their understanding of Judaism, and inspired new traditions in their home.

Etz Chaim’s year-round programs—including weekly Parsha classes, book clubs, Hebrew lessons, and community activism—provide ongoing opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. Looking ahead, the Saltzmans are excited for the organization’s new space and expanded offerings. This October, Syndi will lead her own group of 20 women on a Momentum journey to Israel, passing on the transformative experience that first changed her life. “Etz Chaim has enriched our lives, our family, and given us the opportunity to inspire the next generation,” they reflect. For Rob and Syndi, Etz Chaim is more than an organization—it is a vibrant community that deepens Jewish connection, encourages personal growth, and nurtures a lasting sense of belonging.
